Django Django @ Stereo, 29 February

Live Review by Bram E. Gieben | 12 Mar 2012

As a slow-burning proposition over the last few years, Django Django's reputation as a 'next big thing' band is well-deserved; they've reportedly sold out their first full UK tour while the social media world is all a-whirl with mentions of their songs, shows and irredeemably cute lead singer (who looks uncannily like Scottish comedian and Twitter terrorist Brian 'Limmy' Limond).

For the uninitiated few, their music is an agreeable mixture of uncomplicated DFA-style electronics, 60s psychedelic harmonies and driving percussion. Live however, they somehow fail to be greater than the sum of their parts. Aside from the occasional keyboard and drums-based freakout, their songs sound disappointingly over-familiar. For a band so keen to present themselves as groundbreaking and psychedelic, their song structures often veer into trad territory, and live, this becomes all too apparent.

Nonetheless, a rousing rendition of Storm wins most of the crowd over, while Default and Waveforms remain the digi-pop powerhouses they are on record. With a few more tracks like this under their collective belts, the Djangos will certainly appeal to the summer festival crowds. As it stands, their Beach Boys-meets-LCD Soundsystem schtick is just slightly too conservative to unanimously win hearts tonight. Close, but no banana.

Playing Eye o' the Dug Festival, St Andrews on 14-15 Apr; Dundee Doghouse on 13 Jun; Fence Records' Away Game on the Isle of Eigg on 20-22 Jul http://www.djangodjango.co.uk
