Death Grips @ SWG3, Glasgow, 14 Oct

Live Review by Adam Turner-Heffer | 18 Oct 2016

An ominous buzzing emanates from the PA, welcoming tonight's sold-out SWG3 crowd, and it's the perfect indication of how intense the next hour and a half is going to be. Eschewing a support act for this rare appearance, Death Grips allow the tension to build before taking to the stage, playing up to their controversial, mysterious and (by now) well-known position as a 'punk/hip-hop' act.

It's an effective trick as the crowd are rabidly baying for blood by the time the three-piece emerge, and explode as soon as the first hint of Whatever I Want (Fuck Who's Watching) is detected. The crowd lurch and throb with every one of MC Ride's jarring movements; Zach Hill's erratic drumming and Andy Morin's intense, industrial beats just about hold the whole thing together.

There is no letting up either, as the crowd become absolutely ecstatic for Get Got and I've Seen Footage from 2012's The Money Store and Guillotine from debut mixtape Exmilitary, with further fan favourites peppered throughout a relentless set. Meanwhile, Hot Head and Spikes, from this year's album Bottomless Pit keep their current output running just as seamlessly as their earlier material.

With the set clocking in at 90 minutes, Death Grips' already oppressive sound arguably threatens to crumble under its own weight – they're a band best enjoyed in short doses – but one can't fault their boundless intensity. An abrasive return from a much-missed trio.
