Damon & Naomi @ Night & Day, Manchester, 18 Feb

Damon & Naomi return to Manchester for a short delicate set

Live Review by Pete Wild | 22 Feb 2018

Playing Manchester for the first time since 2009, the Night and Day isn’t exactly creaking at the seams with Damon & Naomi devotees but it doesn’t matter. “Thanks for coming out,” says Damon Krukowski. “Thanks for paying attention.” We get ten songs which in some respects isn’t a lot, but the music is precious gold handed out via teaspoons. They kick off with How Do I Say Goodbye from False Beats and True Hearts. Damon plays relatively delicate acoustic guitar, with Naomi Yang on keys, switching between gentle accompaniment and occasional – yearned for – drone. They share vocals. It’s sweet.

“Promoters don’t tend to book us for Fridays and Saturdays because our fans don’t drink a lot,” Damon says. We all look around. There aren't many people holding pints; it must be true. Later, after A Shining Dream from their most recent record Fortune (which comes paired with a film, Damon tells us, in case there is anyone there who doesn’t know), we get told another story about a couple who had a fight during their last Manchester gig. But we mustn’t get the wrong idea. Before a gig in Dublin, they met a guy on a James Joyce tour who came to one of their shows and met the woman he eventually married. Just goes to show you. Damon & Naomi gigs can run the gamut.

There are highpoints aplenty, not least Turn of the Century from Playback Singers which sounds beautiful and fragile and makes you wonder why Bon Iver can sell out multiplexes and Damon & Naomi can’t fill a shed. Come on. What is wrong with the world? But thoughts like these don’t last. You close your eyes. Damon & Naomi are here now for us to enjoy. It’s enough.
