Chairlift @ Captain's Rest, 17 May

Article by Heather Crumley | 19 May 2009

The fact that tonight's gig, supposedly a hot ticket, has been moved from roomy Stereo to the rather modest Captain's Rest does not bode well, and indeed the venue is sparsely populated for We Are Wolves fun but self-conscious synth-pop and the odious, unnecessary funk delivered by Boy Crisis. Chairlift's reputation as MGMT's scene mates secures them a larger crowd for their first Glasgow gig, but they don't seem to have decided what kind of music they want to make. Spandeau Ballet are significantly less 80s than the opening glut of saccherine synth-drenched songs, and the audience is left scracthing its collective head until the skipping folk of Bruises (of iPod ad fame) kicks in. This prompts wild dancing for a few moments, but the trio then veers into wailing Cranberries-esque territory, and the room quickly empties. The musicianship is faultless, but the scatterbrained set proves confusing and ultimately unsatisfying.
