Ben Kweller @ King Tut's, 5 Dec

Article by Ryan Drever | 18 Dec 2008

As the grinning - albeit slightly portly - Texan takes to the stage, this sold out Tut's crowd cheer and clap like it was a home coming party and from this point on there isn’t a single bad vibe in the air. Kweller -accompanied tonight by an even more portly gentleman on slide guitar- then treats the loyal Glasgow following to a set spanning all four of his albums (including snippets from the forthcoming Changing Horses) but in a slightly more laid back, stripped down fashion. This paves the way for ear-shattering sing-alongs on tracks like Falling and Penny on a Train Track, whilst allowing the charming country tinged set to be littered with friendly banter and general good times. A near-fatal clash with a dodgy piano seat and an extended encore forces the stage crew to impatiently fidget, but it all makes for an entertaining night and a welcome return. [Ryan Drever]
