Bad Religion @ O2 ABC, 25 Aug

Brett Gurewitz and Greg Graffin perfectly epitomise the differing tolls that time can take on your ageing rock star. Mr Brett has the rugged, gracefully-greying demeanour of a man who just came in from an Autumn's evening chopping wood. Front man Graffin on the other hand cheerily ambles on stage like a well-to-do dentist who just strolled in off the golf course.

Not that it makes a bit of difference when the music starts. This is a comprehensive and brilliant document of Bad Religion's 30-year long career – yes it has been that long. There is no loss of enthusiasm as the set drifts from era to era. Fuck Armageddon...This is Hell!, Do What You Want, American Jesus and No Control are energetically whipped out amidst a number of recent compositions, these later numbers arguably sounding better shorn of their digital production in the unpolished live setting.

Graffin amusedly observes that tonight's sizeable crowd have probably attended in the same way as you might go visit an elderly relative in case they're not around much longer, but the surprisingly high number of teens in the audience shows that punk music this exciting, thought-provoking and tuneful easily stands the test of time.
