The Gutter Twins @ Oran Mor

Greg Dulli's rich vocals match well with Mark Lanegan's broken rumble

With a line-up containing two of the more grizzly characters from alternative music's past and present, you can expect stories to make your hair curl in the sewer blues of The Gutter Twins. Both bring elements of their respective past recorded output, Greg Dulli's rich vocals matching well with the broken rumble of Mark Lanegan on debut LP Saturnalia. The swathes of haunted strings and honky-tonk pianos urge the tracks forward, and the dirty guitar riffs and solos give the sound a nasty undercurrent. There's a highly strung tension to The Gutter Twins' music that comes from all of these elements gelling together so tightly, and it builds throughout the course of their album, sometimes breaking, sometimes not. Seeing these songs – plus a few tracks from their solo vault - played live in one of Glasgow's finest venues is almost guaranteed to be an affecting experience, just be sure to take heed of their cautionary tales.
