Southern Fried @ Perth Concert Hall/ Perth Theatre, 1 - 3 Aug

On hand to ease your blues this summer

Article by Laura Barbour | 23 Jul 2008

With a plethora of disposable, mass-indie type bands (did someone say The Hoosiers?) plaguing the line-up of many a festival this summer, you may find yourself vehemently lamenting the apparent death of proper music. Well lament no more my disillusioned folky friend, for on hand to ease your blues this summer is Southern Fried, a sizzling three-day music festival showcasing the best of American Roots Music. Hosted between Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre, the festival is only in its first year but looks sure to be a success. A delightful mix of old school soul, New Orleans funk, fiery bluegrass and Native American music, Southern Fried caters to all tastes. The line-up also boasts Johnny Cash and Hank Williams tribute acts, with some 'Dylanology'™ (did they just make that up?) thrown in for good measure. Perth's very own Southpaw have built up a loyal following with their own take on Americana and are sure to shine alongside renowned acts such as Eddi Reader and Nanci Griffith. With this veritable feast of musicians and speakers on hand across the weekend, you can forget the restivals.[Laura Barbour]
