Live music in Edinburgh

Onra + Wuh Oh @ Sneaky Pete's, 22 Mar
The globetrotting beatmaker stops off in Edinburgh for a late show as part of the Night Movies gig series at Sneaky's, with able support from eclectic Glasgow producer Wuh Oh. Tickets currently sold out, but not to worry – Onra also plays Broadcast in Glasgow the following night

Grandaddy @ Potterrow, 23 Mar
Wait for years for Jason Lytle and company to come to town, and then they show up twice in the space of six months. Hot on the heels of their show at Summerhall last year, and the release of five-star new album Last Place, it's a chance to catch the live version of an album that's loaded with ideas and melodies from cover to cover. Grandaddy are joined by the dream-pop of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Amber Arcades.

State Broadcasters @ The Wee Red Bar, 24 Mar
Glasgow four-piece State Broadcasters host the launch party for brand new album, A Different Past. Marking four and a half years since the release of previous LP Ghosts We Must Carry, this also marks a new chapter for the band as they bid farewell to founding member Graeme Black and welcome new bandmate David McGinty (ex- of Endor and Fake Major) into the fold.

Rachel Sermanni @ Summerhall, 24 Mar
Folk troubadour Rachel Sermanni promises a "mellifluous & melancholy-joyful extravaganza" at Summerhall this Friday; on the same night, Leith tropical pop four-piece Indigo Velvet help lower the curtain on Electric Circus ahead of its closing party on Saturday, and Edinburgh electro trio Noah Noah launch their new single Thick as Thieves up the road at the Mash House.

IDLES w/ Birdhead @ Sneaky Pete's, 25 Mar
‘Well done / Why don’t you get a job / Even Tarquin’s got a job / Mary Berry’s got a job’ – just some of the choice lyrics you can expect to hear at an Idles gig. Not particularly punk singing about Mary Berry, you say? But pair that up with their pure musical force and the anger in frontman Joe Talbot’s gravelly voice and you’ve got yourself a show.

Mick Harvey @ Summerhall, 26 Mar
The Nick Cave and PJ Harvey collaborator plays Summerhall to round off the week, presenting the latest in his series of translated and revamped Serge Gainsbourg tracks.

Live music in Glasgow

Le Thug, Arm Watches Fingers, MC Almond Milk @ The Glad Cafe, 22 Mar
The Fringe programme at the 6 Music Festival looms large over this week's Glasgow gig listings, kicking off with this Save As Collective showcase that teams up nu-gaze trio Le Thug, glitchy electronic producer Arm Watches Fingers, and the inimitable wordplay of MC Almond Milk. Get a taste with our premiere of Almond Milk's excellent new video for Studz Up; watch it in the player below.

Meursault + Siobhan Wilson @ Glad Cafe, 23 Mar
Thursday night presents a real mixed bag of sonic delights to choose from. First up is Song, By Toad's label showcase featuring the tender yet powerful folk of Meursault, the idiosyncratic pop of Jonnie Common, and the label's newest signing Siobhan Wilson. If that doesn't grab you, check out the 6 Music Fringe show over at Oran Mor, featuring Man of Moon, LUCIA, Catholic Action & American Clay. And if that isn't for you, take in the "Ouija pop" stylings of Fat White Family and Eccentronic Research Council sideproject The Moonlandingz at Stereo. See, something for everyone.

Fauves w/ Horsebeach @ King Tut's, 24 Mar
Glasgow quartet Fauves charmed the socks off us with their Metronomy-esque single Hit Like This when we premiered the track last week, so we're hyped for their headline show at King Tut's this weekend, with support coming from fellow Skinny faves Horsebeach.

Triassic Tusk presents Wax and Wayne @ Rum Shack, 25 Mar

It's a doozy of a line-up that Triassic Tusk have put together for a Saturday night in the Southside, with Lomond Campbell, River of Slime, Jo Foster and Withered Hand all on a bill topped by the deviously-titled Kwaing Creasite. You'll never guess his secret identity. Alright, it's King Creosote.

Gig of the week

Austra @ Summerhall, 23 Mar
Katie Stelmanis brings Austra's latest (and impressively prescient) album Future Politics to Edinburgh for a night of tracks for "people who understand the dancefloor as a source of radical ideas and radical joy". We caught up with Stelmanis to discuss the messages of the album – read our chat here – but rest assured that an Austra show offers just the right mix of big beats, basslines and ideas.
