Homegame @ Various Venues, Anstruther, 12-14 Mar

This spring marks the Fence Collective's 7th annual Homegame, taking place over three days in March (Fri 12th - Sun 14th) across various small halls in the Collective's picturesque hometown of Anstruther in Fife. Homegame – which has sold out in record time this year – boasts a tantalising range of musical delights culled from the Fence roster (and beyond) as well as offering you the chance to taste "the best chips in the world".

The festival only holds around 700 people, crammed into the quaint local accommodation, but ultimately this only adds to the homespun feel of the surroundings, in keeping with the intimate nature of Fence's musical output. Oh, and the bill? Well, recent signings François & The Atlas Mountains will close the first night, an act whose frontman Fence boss Johnny Lynch describes as "one of the most inventive musicians we've ever come across, fusing sonorous folk-tinged balladry with African percussive elements." The following evening sees composer, pianist and melody-led electronic maestro Jon Hopkins take the top slot, while fellow Domino Records wunderkind FourTet brings the curtain down on the final night, marking Kieran Hebden's second appearance in the festival's existence.

Elsewhere – and temporarily defecting from the west coast – electronic bliss guru RememberRemember will rub shoulders with minimal maestros Pantha Du Prince, Skinny favourites Django Django, Findo Gask, Eagleowl and an embarassment of other riches to hand, including much of the Fence stable. Of course, The Three Craws will be chief among them – a band comprised of The Pictish Trail, James Yorkston and King Creosote. The trio can also be found performing solo and with other projects including members of Meursault and Animal Magic Tricks over the weekend.

The Homegame is always known for offering up plenty of worthwhile treats and surprises along the way. This year in particular will see King Creosote add an extra-special twist to proceedings with the announcement that he will be playing a brand new album in its entirety at several unique, low-key shows across the weekend. Performed for the first time at last year's Fence Halloween party, the album, entitled My First Bit Of Strange In 13 Years, is part of a unique experiment, exclusive to Homegame. To help explain it a bit better however, here's a few words from the man himself:

"My next album isn't going to be recorded at all, it's only going to be a live experience. I'm going to do seven performances of the album at Homegame in a small room that only holds about 40 people, and what I've insisted on is that the audience records it for themselves on all sorts of cheap, portable equipment (dictaphones, old Mp3 players, mobile phones, etc.) and then passes it around. The idea being that if it's true that passing files around and file-sharing helps build a live audience then this will be the proof in the pudding. But those songs won't exist outside the live performance."

All in all this year's Homegame looks set to trump its predecessor good and proper, so if you're lucky enough to have scored a ticket, bring warm clothes, and have that dictaphone at the ready.
