Harmonia was effectively a side-project, but one which brought together three of Krautrock's biggest names

If you've read the phrase 'Krautrock-style' in a music review for the 187th time and wonder why critics keep peppering their prose with references to a 35-year-old experimental German movement, this is the gig for you. Harmonia was effectively a side-project, but one which brought together three of Krautrock's biggest names: Michael Rother of Neu! joined by Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Möbius of Cluster. The resultant music leaned more towards the delicate, wide-eyed ambience of Cluster, though it did retain the essence of Neu!'s relentless Motorik rhythm. Harmonia's first two albums, Musik Von Harmonia and Deluxe, attracted the attention of prog pioneer Brian Eno, who even joined the group for their third and final (?) LP, Tracks and Traces in 1976, and their inherently Teutonic anti-groove manifesto would heavily influence Bowie and Iggy's Berlin phase. Now, as a whole new generation of artists - and critics - cite their influence, the original trio are back to remind us of Krautrock's relevance in 2008. Fantastisch! [Nick Mitchell]
