Something of a second coming for Dylan Carlson

Article by Paul Neeson | 19 Jun 2008

Fame by proxy was never likely for Earth’s Dylan Carlson, despite the adulation of close friend Kurt Cobain. For while Seattle and its immediate districts led the Grunge revolution, Carlson distanced himself with the looping, migraine ache which characterised Earth’s early work. His fascination with firearms and a worsening heroin addiction drew parallels with the messianic Cobain, though while Cobain’s life ended in dramatic circumstances, Carlson simply disappeared between the cracks of a badly broken one.

Following a decade-aged sabbatical, Earth are enjoying a resurgence, with a new-born Carlson leading them to Glasgow’s Stereo for the second time this year. With the balance of new album The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull and their earlier, heavily overcast persona playing off against one another, this is an opportunity to savour the darker side of Seattle’s musical heritage and take in a true innovator under the halo of something of a second coming.
