These kids may well give old Kevin Shields and his gang a run for their money

Article by Pete Ballantine | 02 Jun 2008

If the first incantation of shoegaze was a decidedly British affair, the second coming of floppy-fringed pedal-pushers is predominantly from across the pond. Not that this is a bad thing, mind you. The raft of American upstarts invading these shores seems to have picked up a few tricks from our old dogs, whilst reviving a genre stuck in a 15 year old rut. At the forefront of this new wave are Deerhunter, with second album Cryptograms and the subsequent Fluorescent Grey EP unleashing a barrage of dreamy pop motifs and effects-driven wig-outs that would’ve had heads nodding in appreciation back in the heyday. A wee dander down to Stereo should provide a suitable aperitif to the return of gaze granddaddies My Bloody Valentine later in the month. It’s unfair to compare, but these kids may well give old Kevin Shields and his gang a run for their money.
