Aqualung @ Reid Concert Hall, 22 Jun

Article by Heather Crumley | 27 May 2009

Somewhere in the darkest depths of your mind, there may lurk the faint memory of Strange and Beautiful, Aqualung's dreamy piano-led lament that in 2002 was variously used by VW to shift the new Beetle and played semi-enthusiastically by Jo Whiley on her Radio 1 show. Since then, however, singer-songwriter Matt Hales has largely fallen off the radar, and chances are the rest of his work has passed you by. Thankfully, he's back to remind us with his fourth (yep - fourth!) album Words and Music, a buoyant, satisfyingly human collection which sees Hales shrug off the dark shroud of previous album Memory Man and concentrate on celebrating the little things in life. The accompanying tour is a second (well, fourth) chance to discover an utterly loveable songwriter who knows how to tug the heartstrings without causing nausea, an invitation made all the more appealing by the looming spectre of a - gulp - more mature Paolo Nutini.
