Merrill Garbus – aka tUnE-yArDs – has released an appropriately bizarre video for ‘Real Thing’ from her latest album Nikki Nack.

In the clip, directed by Tom Jobbins, Garbus faces off against three giant mannequin-headed adversaries in a multi-coloured factory setting.

Describing the thought process behind the video, Garbus said: “I love leaving room for audiences to paint their own mental pictures (of my songs) and as 'Real Thing' could mean so many different things for different listeners, it was the one song I didn't want to make a video for.

“What changed my mind to make this video was wanting so much for this particular song to be heard by more people.”

Jobbins said: “It's a brash and brilliant song and I wanted to match that with the visuals.

“Merging animation and live action allowed us to create different spaces and bring in lots of visual treats.”

tUnE-yArDs embark on a European tour next month, following appearances at a number of summer festivals including Bestival and End of the Road.
