Twins @ Blind Poet

Review by Heather Reid | 27 Aug 2014

Twin silly smarty-pants sketch comics put on a funny show, heavy on the shrugs. Masterfully weaving self-effacing characters with irreverent banter and infectiously casual energy, the show stages a little drama of a pair of twins putting on a sketch show.

At the beginning, Annie McGrath and Jack Barry announce that they have decided to do this to find their other sibling. The series of sketches, including their mustachioed agent and an assassin at a birthday party, tie together the hunt for their missing twin, and putting on a show about putting on a show.

Their gently sarcastic comedy puts the delicate underthings of comedic strategy on display. Drawing attention to the mechanics of comedy itself, at one point Jack Barry puts on a bandana, saying, “Don’t panic, it’s only acting.” When their sibling banter subsides into awkwardness (on purpose) they shrug and ponder, “Should we do a sketch?” And then don their moustaches.

Always pretending to be backed into doing a sketch they didn’t really know how to do, their charming mockery of their own sketches gets a lot of laughs. But don’t be deceived. They will lull you into a fall sense of security by feigning awkward obtuseness – while secretly being very clever and maybe not even twins!
