New food and drink in Edinburgh

Dreadnought Leith

Sat between Ferry Road and Ocean Terminal, Dreadnought's taps have featured a host of our favourite breweries, from local boys Pilot to Northern aces Marble and Magic Rock, since their opening late last month. Top marks to them for a suitably nautical name, and a hat-tip to their eponymous cocktail that's two parts port, one part brandy (let us know in the comments how you get on with that one). 72 North Fort St.

The Voyage of Buck

Formerly Bert's Bar, the refit of this New Town pub is inspired by the worldly travels of its former occupant. The cocktail list is broken down into four geographically-inspired sections – Taipei, Paris, Cairo and Havana – which helps narrow down your choices. The decor has some pleasing little flourishes to it too, and if you're bad with directions you'll be pleased to hear there's a bright yellow piano outside. You won't miss it. Presumably. 29 William St.

The Empress of Broughton St

New from the team behind Lioness of Leith, the Empress is an up-to-date reskin of Mather's Bar on Broughton Street. Expect craft beers, tasty cocktails, and an interior inspired by an eclectic mix of influences. 25 Broughton St.

No. 1 The Grange

New to the Southside, it's the ideal pub for the geographically-challenged, beyond its pleasingly straightforward name. Easy to spot? It's a bright shade of teal, so a big tick there. On a corner? Check, with lots of cosy window seats to look out for that one friend who always wanders off in the wrong direction. Worth finding? With a great tap list, intriguing food options and a relaxed vibe, we reckon so. 1 Grange Rd.

Chaakoo Bombay Cafe

Sister restaurant to Mexican street food eatery (or streatery) Topolabamba, Chakoo is inspired by the cafes opened by Persian and Iranian immigrants to India in the 1800s. The menu's packed with a host of curries and tandoori dishes, while the drinks menu features a truly impressive range of options from lassis and chai to exciting cocktails. Gin, green tea, hibiscus, mint and lemongrass tonic, you say? Sign us up. 79 St Vincent St.

Banana Leaf

A second branch of the much-loved Malaysia-Chinese restaurant, Banana Leaf serve up authentic dishes drawing on the various strands of southeast-Asian cooking. Hotpots, laksas, whole steamed fish – your only limit is your imagination (and waistband). 5 Byres Rd.
