New Cafés in Edinburgh

Fieldwork

A dinky little cafe just off Lothian Road, Fieldwork is all dark wood, exposed brickwork and old school desks. Alongside a well-done aesthetic sit a range of delicious cakes and pastries, coffee from North Berwick's own Steampunk roastery, and a thoroughly chilled vibe perfect for a weekend afternoon of hiding from your to-do list. 105 Fountainbridge, Edinburgh

Brew Lab West End

Brew Lab's second cafe sees them bring their top-notch espresso and filter game to the West End, along with their Cold Brew coffee on draught, and sweet and savoury options from the team behind Lovecrumbs and Twelve Triangles. Inside, it's a departure from their South College Street outpost – the former lock-up is all clean angles, white walls and neon bulbs. If 'neo-90s sci-fi warehouse' is the next trend to catch on in the city's dining scene, you know where you saw it first. 3a Queensferry Street Ln, Edinburgh

Lowdown Coffee

A small but perfectly-formed Scandi-inflected basement beneath George Street, Lowdown is the latest in a growing group of small-scale cafés fighting the good fight against the green and red chain-coffee hordes. Mind you, it's such a calming environment that any kind of fighting will be far from your mind – just pull up a chair, grab a coffee (from Swedish roastery Koppi), and enjoy a break from the city centre rat race. 40 George St, Edinburgh

New venues in Glasgow

BrewBox Coffee

Beloved of Doctor Who fans and law and order obsessives everywhere, there's an ever-increasing chance that your local police box is now home to some delicious food and or drink. That's the case at BrewBox, a 'zero waste' micro-café firing out an impressive range of healthy and sustainable lunch options, cakes and coffees. Wilson St police box, Glasgow

Tapa Kelvinbridge

Glasgow organic bakery Tapa spreads its wings into the West End with this new venture on Great Western Road. Expect the same mix of baked goodies and healthy lunches they've become known for at their Dennistoun home, in a bright and breezy space just down from Kelvinbridge subway. 481 Great Western Rd, Glasgow
