New food and drink in Edinburgh

Dishoom

Now that Edinburgh's food-lovers have finished queuing for hours in the freezing cold for its discounted soft launch last week, it's time to check out Dishoom's first Scottish branch. A take on the Iranian cafes of Bombay, Dishoom's menu is packed with everything from subcontinental takes on the cooked breakfast to intriguing veggie options. Plus, they have a speakeasy-style bar in the basement that's open til 3am, which we massively approve of. 3a St Andrew Sq.

The Refinery

Next door to Dishoom is another London transplant opening its first Scottish outpost. The Refinery aims to be a relaxed all-day venue, with food and drink options from breakfast right through to the very end of the night/ start of the next morning. Their al fresco terrace might be a little optimistic – as we type, half the office are wearing their jackets indoors – but it shows pluck and spirit. Top stuff. 5 St Andrew Sq

Eteaket Rose Street

Gone are the days of trying to pick up your loose leaf teas while dodging people who are trying to eat cake – Eteaket have opened their own retail store. Inside you'll find their range of tasty, tasty teas, plus a whole load of bang-on-trend teapots and tableware to drink it out of. Throw in some daily tastings and you've got a tea-lightful recipe. Tea-lightful. 111 Rose St

Williams and Johnson @ Custom Lane

Down at the Shore, Leith micro-roastery Williams and Johnson host a delightfully stripped-back cafe at the Custom Lane craft project at Custom House. Have a coffee, look at some local crafts, try not to spend all of your money in one go. Open Wed-Sun, 67 Commercial St.

Comet and Blitzen

Seeing as it's Christmas and that, we'd be remiss if we didn't fill you in on a seasonal pop-up well worth checking out. In Stockbridge, Comet and Blitzen have taken over the former Bistro Moderne site for a festive pop-up bar that's all fondue and 'Christmas nachos'. Not entirely sure what those are, but colour us intrigued. 15 North West Circus Pl.

New food and drink in Glasgow

The Kelbourne Saint

In what was once 'the pub where Begbie chucked that glass over his shoulder in Trainspotting' now sits The Kelbourne Saint, brought to you by the team behind Lebowski’s and Porter & Rye. The food comes chiefly from the venue's own rotisserie, so expect roast chicken and suckling pig to feature heavily, while the beer is served up direct from brewery tanks for extra freshness. The ceiling features a lovely mural of an optimistically sunny sky, and film fans will be pleased to hear that Begbie's balcony remains intact. 182 Queen Margaret Dr.

The Spanish Butcher

Meat is the name of the game at The Spanish Butcher, with prime Spanish beef and pork taking centre stage alongside a host of Gallician and Iberian delicacies. Turbot and octopus make an appearance for fish fans, all set against a lovely industrial-chic backdrop. 80 Miller St.
