Where to eat vegan in Liverpool

Feature by The Skinny North | 13 Jul 2016

Keeping things entirely animal-free can be tricky at times, so we've put the feelers out and selected some of our fave places to eat vegan (and vegetarian) in Liverpool, with help from our friends at the Liverpool Vegan Advocacy group.

Greendays

One of our favourite spots on lovely, leafy Lark Lane, Greendays serves veggie and vegan homemade food, salads, coffee and sweet treats; try their amazing milkshakes served in hefty jars with wedges of fruit, or cakes in all kinds of mouthwatery flavour combinations. 13A Lark Ln

The Egg

A Liverpool stalwart, the Egg has been around as long as we can remember dishing up solid cafe fare, from comforting soups to daily specials and Sunday roasts. It's a real centre of the community, staying open 'til 10.30pm every night, hosting regular open mics and readings – and it's also bring-your-own-booze at no extra cost. Top floor, 16-18 Newington

White Wolf Kitchen

Race ahead in the #goals stakes with a visit to Liverpool's centre for body mind and all things calm, White Wolf Yoga. In a huge, Nordic-influenced and naturally lit space, you'll find a varied timetable of yoga classes as well as a fully vegetarian kitchen. Said kitchen serves energising breakfasts and salads, nutrient-rich lunches, power juices and White Wolf's own coffee. Everything's locally sourced to the max, natch. 14 Cook St

Maguire's Pizza

One of Liverpool's most original venues, Maguire's is where (vegan) pizza meets punk rock, with all manner of vegan-meat and dairy-free options on the menu (it even made PETA's list of the best vegan pizza joints in the UK). It's cheap, cheerful and 100% our favourite place to tuck into some grub while watched over by a framed picture of David Hasselhoff. Great gigs, too! 77 Renshaw St

Maray

Just a couple of years old, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired bar Maray has fast become a firm favourite, not least thanks to their 'Meat Free Mondays' (from 5pm, choose four vegan/veggie dishes for just £20). Their specialism is small plates – we recommend the signature falafel sharer with green chilli sauce on Arabic flatbread, and smoked aubergine with red pepper, capers and mint. 91 Bold St

Mowgli

Indian street food spot Mowgli offers a vegan menu as well as an extensive gluten free list, and we love the restaurant for its great atmosphere. Grab a tiffin box ('four tiers of veg and carb jeopardy'), a plate of 'chat bombs' (zingy blasts of tamarind and mint), the green ginger and rhubarb dhal, or pretty much anything else from the flavour-packed menu. 69 Bold St

Lucha Libre

Perhaps surprising for a slap-up restaurant specialising in chunky burritos, taquitos, quesadillas and other hearty Mexican staples, Lucha Libre has a generous range of veggie offerings (with at least one option for each type of dish) and will make a vegan burrito on request – earning them an honorary mention on this list. 96 Wood St

The Art School

And at the finer end of the spectrum The Art School serves up a vegan tasting menu (£89) which currently features dishes including braised black-eyed peas, girolles, charred baby leeks and confit cherry tomatoes; Asian marinated pan-fried tofu with spaghetti vegetables, baby spinach and soy juices; and late-harvest poached pear with mandarin orange puree, winter berries and praline popcorn. 1 Sugnall St
