For the uninitiated, Thanksgiving is the USA's annual celebration of food, family and – once the dinner's settled – fighting over discount televisions on Black Friday. In 2014, Waitrose made the eyebrow-raising claim that one in six people in Britain now celebrate Thanksgiving, although the survey did seem to be largely based on increased turkey consumption, so maybe we're all just celebrating poultry. With all that in mind, here are a selection of bars, restaurants and diners providing some of the best American food in Glasgow this Thanksgiving.

In the hunt for the best burgers and barbecue in Glasgow, diners are spoiled for choice – Bread Meats Bread have recently opened a second spot on Great Western Road to compliment their St Vincent Street home, Meat Bar on West Regent St offer a host of sliders and full-size burgers, Buddy's BBQ at Queen's Park serve up a host of red meat-based treats and Smoak in the Merchant City pride themselves on their Southern-inspired barbecued meats.

If you just want to dip your toe into the Americana pool this Thanksgiving, head to Tribeca on Dumbarton Road, or Nic's NYC Deli at St Enoch Square. The former will serve you up an enormous ice cream milkshake, or 'snow blizzard', that will leave you feeling like a sugar-powered superhero; the latter's donuts hover somewhere between 'feat of engineering' and 'work of art', but that shouldn't stop you devouring one, buying another for later, then eating it on the way down the street. And for a taste of the southern states this Thanksgiving, check out Bar Gumbo on Byres Road, where po'boys, jambalaya and fried catfish abound.
