Bicentennial Can: The Skinny x Barney’s Beer

When it came time to throw a big party to mark 200 issues of The Skinny, we wanted to do something exciting. As former residents of Summerhall in Edinburgh, we have spent *a lot* of time in the Royal Dick bar enjoying the beers from the on-site brewery, Barney’s. It’s only fitting that we’ve teamed up with Barney’s (fresh from winning Small Brewery of the Year at the Scottish Beer Awards) for a very special, brand-new beer for our 200th-issue party.

Bicentennial Can is a dry-hopped Kölsch-style lager (4.5%), developed with the team at Barney’s to pair with a party atmosphere. The name comes from the hops – Centennial is a bit of a citrus bomb, so the Barney's team put some of them in at the early stages, then finished the beer with a second batch to dry-hop. Throw in the fact that we’re celebrating two hundred issues, work out that two centennials make a bicentennial, go into your memory vaults and rustle through the films of the late 1990s, and the text on the side of the can basically writes itself.

As for the beer itself, it’s light, floral and sharp, as well as incredibly refreshing. The excellent artwork by our very own Dalila D’Amico makes sure this is a can that stands out in the crowd, and also marks another outing for our 200th-issue party mascot, who we’ve unofficially dubbed ‘200 Man’. Look at him, clicking his fingers. What a guy.

Bicentennial Can launches at our 200th Issue Party at Summerhall, Edinburgh on 1 Dec – the last few tickets are available now via Skiddle – and will be available in select bottle shops and bars across Edinburgh from 2 Dec.
