Classic Sunday Roast

The Parlour

60 Beech Rd | @parlourchorlton

If you’re looking for a traditional roast, the Parlour is the king of Manchester Sunday dinners. This isn’t a controversial opinion. This Chorlton favourite has won national awards for its roasts and is equally loved by punters.

Head down to the Parlour any Sunday of the year and you’ll find a bustling dining room. The meat comes courtesy of local butcher Frost’s but, unsurprisingly for Chorlton, you’ll also find one of the finest nut roasts in town. Their website says, rather unhelpfully, that Sunday roasts are served “12 til whenever we run out.” You can only be that glib when your product is this good.

Beef and Pudding

37 Booth St  | @beefandpudding

True to its name, Beef and Pudding do a pretty good line in (roast) beef and (Yorkshire) pudding. Their hearty Sunday Service menu also includes a half chicken with all the trimmings, roast pork belly with black pudding stuffing and seasonal vegetarian roasts. All come swimming in the type of gravy your mother used to make.

Casual Sunday Roast

Gorilla

54-56 Whitworth St W | @thisisgorilla

A dependably great roast dinner in the centre of town, your regular options are dry-aged Lancashire topside of beef with horseradish sauce; roasted chicken breast with garlic & thyme, sage & onion stuffing and cranberry sauce; or pork belly with crackling and apple sauce. Yum. For the non-meat eaters, there’s a sweet potato, apricot and chestnut roast. Gorilla is perfect for those who like a really long lie in on a Sunday, as the roast dinners keep on coming well beyond lunch until 10pm.

Fallow Cafe

2a Landcross Rd | @fallowcafe

This Fallowfield favourite serves up some incredible roast dinners. The cuts and choice of meat vary from week to week, but they’re always top quality. The veggie options are pretty inviting too; no dry nut roasts here. If you happen to visit the Fallow one of the Sundays when its Veggie Wellington is on the menu (a delicious sweet potato, red pepper and garlic concoction), order it!

Sunday Roasts to Share

Volta

167 Burton Rd  | @Voltamanchester

At the home of Didsbury’s premiere roast dinners, it’s all about the sharing platters. Available in portions for two or four, each come with three types of meat (rare roast beef, succulent roast pork and a whole poussin), Yorkshires, two types of potatoes (roast and mashed), crispy crackling and a mountain of earthy veg. If you’re feeling decadent, add the heavenly cauliflower cheese.

Electrik

559 Wilbraham Rd | @Electrikbar

When visiting Electrik on a Sunday, as with Volta, go for the huge sharing platter (also for two or four). Again you’ve a selection of beef cooked rare, moist roast pork and whole poussins but Electrik’s twist is that it’s all served on a meter long board. Delicious and dramatic, but tricky to balance on your table or for the waiting staff to deliver without some slapstick disaster.

Roasts for Special Occasions

Hawksmoor

186, 184 Deansgate | @HawksmoorMCR

With a £20 price tag, Hawksmoor’s takes on the humble Sunday roast and elevates it to high-end dining. The price tag comes because of the meat: a 55 days slow-roast rump that melts on impact with your mouth. Trimmings include duck fat roasted potatoes, crisp and light Yorkshire puddings, buttery carrots and greens, and lashings of bone marrow and onion gravy.

Mr Cooper's House

The Midland Hotel, Peter St  | @MrCoopersHouse

One of the most affordable ways to enjoy Simon Rogan's great but pricey restaurant is with a Sunday roast. A very competitive £13 gets you a generous plate of Cumbrian beef served with dripping potatoes, parsnips, savoy cabbage, carrots and a feather-light Yorkshire pud.

Sunday Roasts with a Twist

Soup Kitchen

31-33 Spear St | @SoupKitchen_Mcr

Fancy something a bit different this Sunday? Soup has you covered with their Jamaican twist on roast dinner. The Northern Quarter canteen serves up jerk chicken or jerk lamb shank with roast sweet potatoes, spiced butternut mash and a ginormous curried Yorkshire pudding, all smothered in fiery jerk gravy. Their vegan roast option is also to die for: swap out the meat for jerk jackfruit and fluffy dumplings.

The Drop

356 Barlow Moor Rd  | @TheDropBarCafe

Another great Manchester roast with a Caribbean twang can be found at Cholton hangout The Drop, who offer up a Sunday 'Reggae Roast' of lemon and thyme bbq chicken, rice'n'peas, mac and cheese and sweet potato. Jammin
