The rich sights and sounds of Africa hit the misty streets of the 'Burgh.
In association with Africa in Motion: the Edinburgh African Film Festival - see our preview in the Film section - The Bongo Club are playing host to the legendary Rita Ray. Ray is a world-class DJ and top buff of Afrobeat, desribed as a "combination of hi-life, rock and reggae from Nigeria pioneered throughout the 1970s". She’s been instrumental in regenerating the African scene down south, not just through DJing, but chucking in live music, poetry and rapping to create an all round musical phenomenon. She’s in Scotland for one night only and accompanying her in the line-up is our very own home grown female MC Sweet E. A founding member of Scottish hip hop crew NorthernXposure - described by us earlier this year as "the major contenders to break Scottish hip-hop abroad and elsewhere in the UK" - Sweet E has been creating a worldwide name for herself supporting acts like Amy Winehouse, and the opportunity to see her freestylin' it with Ray should not be missed. You can also catch Senegalese musician Samba Sene and his jazzy band Diwan, who sing in French, English and their native Wolof. Earlier that evening, Ray will be taking part in a discussion on the documentary As Old As My Tongue, a portrait of Bi Kidude, a living legend of Zanzibar music, which Ray co-produced; present your ticket stub at the Bongo box office to qualify for concession price entry.
