Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – season 3

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a candy-coloured laugh riot with a dark core. For those unfamiliar, Tina Fey’s lightning-paced sitcom follows Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), a young woman who spent 15 years held captive in an underground bunker by a cult leader (Jon Hamm); when Kimmy is rescued and emerges into the sunlight, she vows to live her life to the fullest, which for her means dressing in neon pink and acid yellow, moving to Brooklyn and pushing her childhood traumas down into the pit of her stomach.

You might not have guessed from the premise, but Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is an effervescent delight, full of goofy plot and surreal zingers. The toothache-inducing Kimmy is supported by one of the great sitcom characters of modern times: Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), Kimmy’s gay, black, bald, flamboyant and utterly self-absorbed flatmate. For a taste of his brilliance, here’s the character's video to his absurd pop song Peeno Noir – not an ode to the priciest of wine grapes, but to "black penis". Streaming on Netflix from 19 May

Snatched

It’s been 15 long years since Goldie Hawn – once the brightest comedian on the big screen – last appeared in a movie, so that should be enough reason to celebrate the release of Snatched. But there are plenty more.

The individual who’s dragged Hawn out of semi-retirement to play her mother is Amy Schumer, just about the funniest standup on the planet right now. The film itself, a caper about a mother and daughter getting kidnapped while on vacation in Ecuador, was written by Katie Dippold, who has form with female-led comedies – she’s a Parks and Rec writer and penned the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy action-comedy The Heat. And the film co-stars the great Joan Cusack and Wanda Sykes. Those are more than enough reasons to give Snatched a look this weekend. Released 19 May by 20th Century Fox

Colossal

Anne Hathaway breaks from her usual sweet girl stereotype to play a hard-drinking young woman whose life is in a downward spiral, and who, curiously, discovers she's the animating force behind a Godzilla-like monster that's been attacking downtown Seoul, South Korea. This is the English language debut of talented Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), and the result is a high-concept indie that’s part character study, part blockbuster audition. La Strada

The film that inspired Mr Tambourine Man, La Strada is one of the most loved pictures from the great Italian director Federico Fellini. (For the record, we think it’s one of his most self-indulgently sentimental films, but we’re not going to turn down the opportunity to see a Fellini film on the big screen.) Giulietta Masina, Fellini’s partner, stars as a sweet young woman who is sold to a seedy travelling circus, and she’s put through the wringer. This bittersweet comedy won Fellini his first of four Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, and won't leave a dry eye in the house. Rereleased by StudioCanal 19 May
