In new Netflix film Bright, LA becomes a literal City of Angels – and fairies, and orcs, and elves, and a whole host of other fantasy creatures. Will Smith stars as a detective who finds himself partnered with the first orc on the LAPD force. In the trailer they come across a character played by Lucy Fry, who’s in possession of a literal magic wand that can turn adversaries to ash and grant your every wish. Unsurprisingly, half of LA’s underworld want to get hold of it.

Especially keen to get their hands on the wand are a group of evil elves, two of whom are played by Noomi Rapace and Edgar Ramirez.

The film is directed by David Ayer, who recently worked with Smith on Suicide Squad, while Australian actor Joel Edgerton is under a layer of orc make-up as Smith’s partner. The script, meanwhile, comes from Max Landis, best known for ace superhero flick Chronicle and action comedy American Ultra.

Speaking at Comic-Con in San Diego, Smith said he enjoyed exploring the racial undertones of Bright’s parallel universe. “[Joel’s] character is the first orc on the team, and I’m an African-American police officer who just found somebody else to be racist against,” Smith told Entertainment Weekly. “You never get to be on that side of racism when you’re black. ‘Look, man, I don’t want no orcs in my car!'”

Bright is released via Netflix on 22 Dec
