Over two decades after his death, we’re still obsessed with Tupac Shakur. The rapper rose to fame during the early 90s with a host of hip-hop classics before he was shot dead, at the height of his fame in 1996, aged just 25 – although plenty of conspiracy theorists still contend the rapper is alive and well and living it up in Cuba.

The trailer for a new film, which arrived online today, shows Tupac as a young boy growing up in New York in a political household, before moving to California, where his raw talent helped him rise to be one of the greatest rap artists of all time. The clip suggests the film will deal with his career in the music industry, his battles with crime and the circumstances of his murder.

Demetrius Shipp stars, and he’s a dead ringer for Shakur. Another hip-hop legend turns up in the film in the form of Tupac’s East Coast rival Chris Wallace, better known as the Notorious BIG. Biggie Smalls is played by Jamal Woolard, who also played the rapper in Notorious. "We've got a big platform," Tupac tells him. "Use that platform to make change."

The title of the film is taken from Tupac’s fourth studio album, which was released posthumously in 1996. Take a look at the trailer in the player above.

All Eyez on Me opens in the US 16 Jun; the UK release date has yet to be announced
