The trailer for new Paul Thomas Anderson film Phantom Thread has just dropped, giving us the first glimpse of PT's first film since Inherent Vice, which came top of our writers' films of 2015. Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, the film sees Anderson reunite with Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an explosive performance in 2007’s There Will Be Blood.

There’s been quite a bit of secrecy around the production, but the plot synopsis was finally shared at the weekend. The film centres on renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Leslie Manville). They're at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock.

“Women come and go through Woodcock’s life,” reads the synopsis, “providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.”

Phantom Thread also sees Anderson once again collaborating with Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, who’s contributed scores to Anderson’s last three films – Inherent Vice, The Master and There Will Be Blood. In the trailer you can hear some of the unnerving, atonal piano score Greenwood has written for the film, which gives a clue that this will be no standard costume drama.

Phantom Thread is released 2 Feb in the UK by Universal. Take a look at the trailer in the trailer above
