Twin Peaks cast: Familiar faces and big surprises

Check out the ridiculous Twin Peaks cast!

Article by News Team | 26 Apr 2016

As filming wrapped up on David Lynch’s return to Twin Peaks, the huge 217 strong cast list for the new series has been revealed – and it’s ridiculous.

We already knew that Kyle MacLachlan would return as FBI agent Dale Cooper, and, more surprisingly, so would Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer, the teen girl whose murder agent Cooper was investigating.

Some familiar faces are also returning to this new series set 25 years after the first, including David Duchovny, Alicia Witt and David Patrick Kelly. Harry Dean Stanton, who appeared in the underrated big-screen prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, also pops up on the cast list. Notable absences from the original series include Lara Flynn Boyle, Michael Ontkean and Piper Laurie.

Laura Dern: David Lynch's favourite collaborator

Here are some of the surprising and less-surprising new cast members from the cast list, published on Showtime's Tumblr last night.

We did see that coming – Lynch favourites:

Laura Dern

A Lynch fave, having starred in Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart and his last feature Inland Empire – it’s no surprise Lynch would want to have the talismanic Dern in his Twin Peaks cast.

Naomi Watts

The Aussie actor was a revelation in Lynch's Hollywood neo-noir Mulholland Drive – of course he would want to work with her again.

Trent Reznor

Not as surprising as you might think. The Nine Inch Nails frontman produced the soundtrack for Lynch’s Lost Highway, and Lynch returned the favour by directing a weird-ass promo for Reznor's band's 2013 single Came Back Haunted.

We didn't see that coming:

Monica Bellucci

Might Twin Peaks do for the Italian model/actress what Blue Velvet did for Isabella Rossellini?

Michael Cera

The weedy Arrested Development star's inclusion in the cast might raise an eyebrow, but anyone who’s kept an eye on Cera’s increasingly eccentric career shouldn’t be too surprised. And he was brilliant in Magic Magic, Sebastian Silva's comic horror indebted to Lynch. Might Cera's mix of nice guy and creep fit Lynch’s world perfectly?

Amanda Seyfried

Might the Mean Girls and Mamma Mia! star join Watts and Dern as a Lynch blonde with a wild side?

Blasts from the past. Names we really didn’t expect to see in Twin Peaks' cast – or any cast list for that matter:

Original ghostbuster Ernie Hudson.

Manic Scream star Matthew Lillard.

Jim Belushi, the little-loved younger brother of the much-loved John Belushi.

Meg Foster, best known as Evil-Lyn in the Dolph Lundgren-starring Masters of the Universe.
