Surely one of the most anticipated films of the summer, Sofia Coppola returns to filmmaking with The Beguiled. Based on Thomas Cullinan’s American Civil War-set novel of the same name, the film – Coppola’s first since 2013’s The Bling Ring – is described as “an atmospheric thriller” and the first full trailer suggests buckets of atmosphere is what we’re going to get.

The story unfolds at a secluded girls’ boarding school in the South during the Civil War. Colin Farrell plays a wounded Union soldier who’s reluctantly taken in by the school’s head mistress, played by Nicole Kidman, when one of the young girls finds him injured in the woods. The official synopsis goes on to say that as the sheltered girls provide refuge and tend to his wounds, “the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events.”

A great film has already been made from Cullinan’s novel: Don Siegel’s 1971 effort starring Clint Eastwood as the wounded soldier. We’re intrigued to see what Coppola brings to the material with her very particular sensibility. Take a look at the trailer in the player above.

The Beguiled has its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May and is released in the UK on 14 Jul
