A Very Murray Christmas: Watch the trailer

Bill Murray is joined by a host of stars in the new trailer to his Sofia Coppola-directed Christmas Special for Netflix, A Very Murray Christmas.

As anyone who has seen yuppie Christmas Carol riff Scrooged will know, Bill Murray doesn’t scream Merry Christmas. That’s why the idea of him doing an old-school Christmas special is so delightful.

Reuniting with Sofia Coppola, who used Murray’s hangdog charms to great effect in Lost in Translation, the trailer for A Very Murray Christmas, which dropped last night, suggests it’s going to be a heady blend of Bob Hope-style yultide schmaltz and Murray's cynicism.

Murray, playing himself, appears to be assembling a star-studded variety show, but with the entire city of New York in shutdown due to a blizzard, will the likes of George Clooney, Sir Paul McCartney and Pope Francis turn up?

From the trailer it’s clear that at least one of that golden triumvirate will be there, along with the likes of Amy Poehler, Jason Schwartzman and Miley Cyrus, who’s seen in the video belting out a Christmas standard with Murray.

The best moment in the trailer comes from Michael Cera, though. “This sad excuse for a Christmas special. It’s starting to look more like a Chris-mess… as in what a mess!” says Cera. “We have George Clooney,” replies Murray. “I rest my case. You saw Monuments Men?” “I was in it.”

Catch A Very Murray Christmas on Netflix from 4 December.
