There’s a petition for an Avengers: Infinity War Edinburgh premiere

Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan are down, after large parts of Marvel's latest were shot in the Scottish capital

There’s a petition for everything nowadays, from the 50,000 people who tried to stop Barr changing the Irn-Bru recipe to the squad who called for fire ants to be renamed to spicy boys, but here’s one we can get behind. A group of Edinburgh film fans are calling for Avengers: Infinity War to have its world premiere in Auld Reekie. The organisers of this change.org petition argue that since Avengers: Infinity War shot here in spring of 2017 for seven weeks, and that Edinburgh is the film's only significant non-studio location in the world, it would be the perfect place to host the premiere.

“We think that this is the perfect chance to showcase what the city has to offer in terms of future Hollywood film productions and premieres,” reads the statement on the petition’s change.org page. “More importantly, it would be an honour and a great thank you to the city and its people, and the fans within the city, in their contribution to creating this film.”

The petition has one supporter at least: Dave Bautista. The hulking star of Guardians of the Galaxy will be appearing in Infinity War alongside his fellow Guardians and it sounds like he’d be delighted to bring the film premiere to Scotland. On Twitter he wrote, “I’m down to go to Edinburgh!!”, before sharing the petition.

Among the first to reply to Bautista’s tweet were Infinity War’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, who also sound up for a return trip to Scotland. “Let’s do it, Dave,” said the filmmaking siblings. “We’re on it. Get ready Edinburgh.”

Less surprising was that the petition found a champion in Infinity War's lone Scot: Karen Gillan. The Inverness-born actor and member of the Guardians of the Galaxy team seems more than happy to bring her new film to her homeland. “Ha! Hell yes!!!!” was her response to Bautista’s tweet.

The chances of receiving the world premiere seem slim, but how about the UK premiere? Who else is up for Robert Downey Jr (aka Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (aka Black Widow), Tom Holland (aka Spider-Man), Chadwick Boseman (aka Black Panther) and all the Chrises (Pratt, Evans, Hemsworth) walking the red carpet at Fountainbridge Cineworld in the rain?
