The Meg trailer: It’s Jason Statham v a huge-arse shark

The Stath is gonna’ need a much, much bigger boat in this daft-looking creature feature

Who doesn’t love a good shark movie? Whether it’s a great one (Jaws), a good one (The Shallows) or a ridiculous one (Deep Blue Sea), we’re always keen to see people getting bitten in two by a monster from the deep. Add in Jason Statham as the grizzled sea captain/marine biologist out to take down the beast, and we’re first in line.

That’s the premise of The Meg, the new creature feature in which Jason Statham has to stop the world’s biggest shark (aka the thought-extinct-for-two-million-years megalodon) from chomping its way through a holiday resort. If you haven’t guessed that the film isn’t to be taken too seriously, the bouncy tones of Bobby Darin’s swing classic Beyond the Sea playing over the film’s first trailer should give you a clue.

We begin in a futuristic-looking deep sea lab, and we end with Statham saying the line “chew on this you ugly…” In between we get a giant squid attack, a dog in peril and some poor sap trying to escape from the behemoth in a Zorb ball. So in short, it looks like riotous fun.
