SxSW festival was reportedly abuzz last night (Sat 11 Mar) with the eagerly-anticipated world premiere of Baby Driver, the latest film from British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs the World). Ansel Elgort stars as a baby-faced getaway driver who’s looking to leave his life of crime behind after falling for a waitress he meets at an LA diner, played by Lily James. The mouth-watering cast also includes Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey as the head of a bank robbing crew.

It’s been a few years since Wright had a movie out (2013's The World's End), thanks to the runaround he had with Marvel while trying to make Ant-Man (Peyton Reed ended up directing when Wright left the project), so the anticipation for Baby Driver is high. The film's first two trailers were released online to coincide with the premiere and suggest we’re in for a rubber-burning action film in the mode of Walter Hill’s 70s car chase classic The Driver, but with Wright’s signature breakneck pace, comic flourishes and pop sensibilities.

Music looks to also play a massive part in the movie. Elgort’s driver, improbably named Baby, constantly has his headphones in listening to his iPod. “He had an accident as a kid,” explains Spacey’s kingpin character in the trailer. “Still has a hum in the drum. Plays music to drown it out, and that’s what makes him the best.”

Wright confirmed the importance of music at Baby Driver's SXSW premiere. “I was just listening through my record collection and I’d envision scenes,” Wright said after the screening, reported Deadline. “I wouldn’t write scenes until I found the right track.”
