If you like your documentaries to be both extremely meta and deeply moving, you’ll love A Cat Called Dom, the debut feature film from Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson. You can get a flavour of the Scottish duo’s unclassifiable documentary-animation hybrid by taking a look at the first trailer for the film – which won the award for Best Feature Film at last year's Edinburgh International Film Festival – in the video player above or via our YouTube channel at this link.

For those unfamiliar with Anderson and Henderson's work, they have long been two of the most exciting voices on Scotland's short film scene. They’ve been working together since they were students at Edinburgh College of Art in the early 2010s. Both have fruitful solo careers, but there is an undeniable alchemy when the pair work together, like on award-winning projects The Making of Longbird (2011) and Monkey Love Experiments (2014).

We at The Skinny have been extremely excited to see Anderson and Henderson take their brand of bittersweet, meta filmmaking to feature length. The genesis for A Cat Called Dom couldn’t be more tragic, though. When Anderson’s mother is diagnosed with mouth cancer, he decides the only way to cope with the situation is to make a film. Blending fiction, documentary and an animated black cat who manifests on Anderson’s laptop, A Cat Called Dom is an ingenious experiment in filmmaking as therapy.

Take a look at the trailer above before it heads to a cinema near you; Anderson is touring with the film to several Scottish cinemas this month., giving Q&As at Glasgow Film Theatre on 23 Sep, Cameo in Edinburgh on 24 Sep and Dundee Contemporary Arts on 30 Sep.
