Casanova

Ledger is charmless and - sorry girls - never even topless

Film Review by Caroline Hurley | 17 Mar 2006
Film title: Casanova
Director: Lasse Hallstrom
Starring: Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller

Released as Valentine's Day fodder, 'Casanova' pairs Oscar hopeful Heath Ledger with Sienna 'what is she famous for?' Miller to unbearably bland effect. In eighteenth century Venice, legendary lover Casanova gets into and out of beds and trouble until he meets staunch feminist and secret writer Francesca Bruni. Wackiness ensues. Venice looks as beautiful, clean and free of pigeons as was Amelie's Paris but really, shit in a nice box is still shit. Casting an Australian as Casanova was an interesting move and possibly done for laughs, but Ledger is charmless and - sorry girls - never even topless. Sienna Miller tries, but the only thing on screen that has a convincing mind of its own is her wig. I didn't expect to fall in love with this film, I was just after a bit of fun, but with no nudity, no sex and definitely no romance I was left feeling empty and used. [Caroline Hurley]
