Phil Nichol

Article by Pete Myall | 26 Mar 2009

You might remember Phil Nichol from his 1993 hit, The Only Gay Eskimo. I certainly remember it, because the last twenty minutes of his set were devoted to him starting to play it, stopping playing it, laughing because someone interrupted him playing it, and doing everything he possibly could to goad his doting audience into foaming apoplexies of joy because at any second now PHIL NICHOL is about to play The Only Gay Eskimo!

Nichol does have a set beyond his 16 year old comedy song though, though some individual moments can be quite funny. He rattles jokes off so quickly and maniacally that a couple are bound to stick, and while he's never particularly clever, he is at least likeable. But do you really need to throw your arms up in the air and scream every time you mention a gay person? Do you need to vigorously fellate the mic every time you mention a blowjob? Pretty much every joke he made played off a stereotype, Little Britain style, and it didn't work.

To be fair, his audience - the ones that knew every word to The Only Gay Eskimo - lapped it up. Maybe you might, too. I didn't.
