Mark Steel

Article by Simon Proctor | 26 Mar 2009

As you'd expect from Mark Steel, there is a strong political theme running through this show but as he says, you can’t just do politics - you’ve got to make people laugh too. Which he then proceeds to do with a selection of well-timed jokes that show the breadth of his travels, giving the impression he has walked the length of Britain. He demonstrates a startling knowledge of the islands and the people who live on them, populating his jokes with a variety of brilliant impressions and
accents.

As a long time political activist, you can see the twinkle in his eye and the added curve to the grin when the topics roll round to the current state of British politics. As usual he pulls no punches, at one point shocking himself with the strength of his vitriol. Not that anyone seemed to mind from the laughter filling the room. A marvellous night that goes to show that even in his 40s and facing the realisation that he’s not the young firebrand he once was, he’s still a smart and funny man.
