Glasgow Comedy Festival Blog: The Last Laugh

Blog by Susan Calman | 29 Mar 2009

I am writing this at 2 in the morning as I have been struck by insomnia again.  It occasionally plagues my life and it has arrived like a mofo today. Instead of lying in bed thinking about all the things I could achieve in my life if I wasn’t so sodding lazy I have decided to get up and do them. I find that at least erases the sweating panic I have when there is nothing to distract me and all I have to think about is the fact that I am 34 and my favourite possession is a clockwork farm in a plastic egg.

But on to the topic now, it is Sunday and the end of the Comedy Festival this evening.  The end of many many days of drinking and making people laugh (sometimes).  As usual I didn’t see all of the shows I wanted to and I didn’t drink nearly as much as I wanted to. But there have been highlights along the way. My solo show went well I thought and has given me a lot of confidence for August.  In addition I saw a lot of my friends blossom when performing their shows and it made me proud to know them.  I also saw a lot of arse licking, wanking and general shitness but it wouldn’t be a festival without it!  What has made it wonderful is the organisation and support the festival gives the acts, when you visit other festivals and see how they do it, it makes you appreciate Glasgow all the more.

Anyway, as discussed in my last blog, I went to see the Naked Comedy show on Thursday night. And it is important to point out that none of my comments are meant in any way as a negative way towards the wee boys who performed. It took a lot of guts to do that and well done for doing so. And on a positive note, by attending I increased the amount of real live penises I have seen in my life by 4! So that was worth the money! Not really. I am, as many are aware, a card carrying lesbo and whilst I dabbled in the dark world of heterosexuality when younger it was really just a phase. So to me the male form is less than appealing but I can appreciate an attractive torso and the like. I wasn’t really prepared for the genitals to be honest and, like many in the audience, was entirely distracted from the comedy by just looking at cock. It was strange because as a comedy show it wasn’t entirely successful (because of the cock watching) and it wasn’t titillating either. It was strange and whilst it entirely confirmed (if required) my sexuality it was a bit meh.

I had a couple of gigs on Friday, one being Funny Women at Blackfriars. The audience were smashing, comprising as these evenings often do, middle aged women and lesbians. The perfect comedy audience some would say, one group offended if you don’t talk about being gay the other offended if you do. They were nice though and  everyone seemed to go away happy. My Sunday will hopefully involve Elaine and Niall’s extra show of All Kinds of Everything, a gangster party with Frankie Boyle and many many drinks at the Stand.

I hope that you enjoyed the festival, saw lots of shows, got very drunk and maybe even watched a stranger’s cock on stage.
