Paradise in The Zoo

Live Review by Antony Sammeroff | 18 Aug 2011

It sounds like the plot of a Greek Tragedy. A humble apothecar is ready to hang himself after his betrothed's father refused to grant him her hand and he think's he's poisoned her to death - but he hasn't really. Well that bit sounds like the plot of a Greek Tragedy, the part where the Royal Peer passes out after eating too much, a little less so.

This love, suicide and baked-good driven farce of light opera set in Edinburgh Zoo has a rather dandy opening which could go either way, but any doubt dissolves the moment the cast open their mouths to set free their beautiful voices.

The simple yet charming score, amusing libretto and quirky direction make for a very agreeable 50 minutes. No time for tedium, just good light-hearted fun.
