Bound for Glory

Review by Lorna Frost | 16 Aug 2012

In This LandInterplay does justice to the great songs and dramatic life of Woody Guthrie. Steve Byrne has taken Woody's music and story and this, together with the talent of the musicians and singers, thoughtful design and choreography, makes a truly powerful combination.

It would be misguided to mention any one of the cast as each performer shines in his or her moments. In particular they played their multiple roles so well. Consistently fine acting, fine singing and fine musicianship. Their enthusiasm would do Woody proud and the production can rightly take its place alongside the other cultural heroes who have acknowledged Woody's influence on their work.

The story resonates particularly in our own times since the same issues of poverty and property, of lack and luxury, of right and copyright, threaten our lands, all lands. Nowadays the gambling man has even more money than the working man, the statistics are frightening. Woody's songs and musical legacy are fairly well known but the ups and downs of his personal life-his family, travels, loves and struggles with illness- are less so. This show plugs these gaps and tells the story of the whole man.
