The Secret Agent @ Traverse

Review by Eric Karoulla | 16 Aug 2013

"Something must be done" is the overall message The Secret Agent by theatreO urges the audience to remember.

While the acting is strong, the songs in between seem to delay the action rather than help the narration. Furthermore, the limericks at the beginning seem to take on a more sexual, playful tone yet that doesn't persist throughout, which leaves many questions answered.

On the whole, however, the story is very intelligently constructed around its characters, and the way it is narrated is partial – from every character's viewpoint. It is given away in fragments, such that the entire story is clear only in retrospect.

The problem is, the setup of the entire play sets about disproving this phrase they repeat over and over. Now, the question remains: did they undermine their message on purpose or are they not aware of it? Are they being ironic? It is hard to tell whether this is intentional; after all, by the end of the play, they have proven that action without thought behind it is worse than no thought at all.
