The Fanny Hill Project @ Zoo

Review by Eric Karoulla | 19 Aug 2013

The Fanny Hill Project is a powerful discussion of society's perception of sex workers. Kyra is invited on stage to tell the story of how and why she came to work in a foot fetish club. Through a series of extracts from her tale and encounters with the media that focus on makeovers and cosmetics, Theatre State reflect the absurdity of social attitudes towards sex work, and equally stigmatised industries.

The show is reasonably short but crammed with ideas. In retrospect, it seems quite intelligent to have a show of this length, allowing the ideas to come to the fore without overwhelming the audience, but being intense enough to convey what the performers feel.

Behaviours haven't changed much since the 19th century, to be honest. While there is not always a physical reprimand that can be enforced by law (due to the evolution in certain human rights), the social stigma hasn't been reduced or altered at all. The question the show does not answer, however, is how do we bring about that change? Pointing out there has been little change encourages people to do something, yet if there is no direction or suggestion given, where does that leave us?
