The 56 @ Underbelly, Bristo Square

FYSA Theatre provide an untold look into the Bradford City Fire in The 56 through a verbatim performance using interviews from three survivors. The title signifies how many lost their lives that day. The show aims to bring to life the horrors of that day, though at times this is not quite conveyed as emotively as it could be by the three actors.

By providing a detailed account of the day up until the incident, during and after it, a picture of normal life gone wrong is painted well. However there does not appear to be much depth of emotion from the cast who speak of this tragedy. It feels as though they are remembering a script and that's all.

The words themselves are raw and incredibly detailed, haunted memories of those who will never forget that day regardless of whether everyone else does. The strength of the cast and direction fell slightly short of portraying this evocatively enough.

The set is nicely simple and the cast remain seated until the last moments when the 56 names of the victims are read out. This is a particularly touching moment and a nice end to the show as each victim is remembered as an individual.

With a stronger link between cast and script The 56 could be the warm yet hard-hitting remembrance theatre it should be.
