Showstopper @ Gilded Balloon Teviot

Article by Bernard O'Leary | 20 Aug 2010

No other audience is having as much fun as the Showstopper! audience. The choking heat in the Teviot Debating Hall doesn't stifle the huge crowd, who are screaming suggestions with the enthusiasm of stockbrokers on the trading floor. Compere Dylan Emery seems slightly overwhelmed by the reaction.

Showstopper! promises a brand-new, bespoke musical every night. After Emery and the audience have decided the major details of the show, which tonight was a musical set in Atlantis entitled Wet Wet Wet, the performers get  stuck right in. We’re treated to the surprisingly complex story of an Atlantean soldier who falls for Aphrodite, awakening the wrath of Kraken. Along the way are some genuinely showstopping musical numbers, including the Grease-style Mortal Lovin and a flamenco ballet depicting the sinking of Atlantis.

The Showstoppers have a phenomenal team spirit. Everyone works their
backsides off to bring the piece together, and everyone gets a fair share of the laughs, with even the lighting technician raising a few chuckles. That, plus the incredible individual talent on stage, makes for a show that’s explosive, hilarious and relentlessly entertaining. They receive a standing ovation at the end. This show will run and run.
