Kaya – Dream Interpreter @ Assembly George Square

Review by Antony Sammeroff | 09 Aug 2012

Kaya was a successful recording artist in his country but found himself still somehow unsatisfied. Besieged by dreams, sometimes fifty a night, he was lead towards his true calling in life as a dream interpreter, isolating himself for a long time to study them before reemerging to hold workshops, give lectures and write books on the subject.

His show begins with a video displaying a man walking a dog who soon pees fire onto a tree. Hmm. Well no matter, the symbols in this dream are used to explain some of the principles that go into dream interpretation: that each symbol has a positive and negative meaning and which is determined by whether those symbols are in their correct environment or otherwise; that each aspect in a dream reflects a specific aspect of ourselves, and that each of the four elements allude to aspects of the the psyche - fire to spirit, earth to actions, air to thought, and water to emotions.

The multimedia presentation which accompanies this talk helps illuminate concepts and is visually good but some of the changes in music are a little jarring. Using examples of dreams, described by the dreamers on video, Kaya illustrates the way he might interpret a dream, before opening up to the audience for questions, or dreams to interpret.

There could be more of the educational content on the guiding principles of dream interpretation, but seeing Kaya over the fringe is definitely a worthwhile investment for anyone interested in the interpretation of dreams, psychology, and spirituality, either for general knowledge or to practice the art.
