Flamenco Speaks

Bubblebursting flamenco

Feature by Miguel Vargas | 25 Aug 2010

In Rhythms with Soul I give my personal interpretation of flamenco. Since I have a very varied cultural background, my perspective may be a bit different from other flamenco dancers'.

I am influenced by everything. I admire many things in modern and classical dance and I have always enjoyed African based dances that are found in South America and the Carribbean. We have incorporated a lot of modern dance. Also we have regional dances of Andalucia in addition to pure flamenco.

I was always interested since I was a child in many musical styles. All these different influences are a part of me so, unconsciously, I have created a very modern piece that many people can relate to.

I believe that the purpose of performance dance is the transmission of spirit. Since we don't live in a bubble, we have a need to give what we have and take what the audience gives back as well. It's an important exchange.

We didn't really know what to expect this being our first time at the Fringe. The response has been really incredible. The audiences have been so supportive and enthusiastic with some people coming back twice or three times!
