Female Hitchhiker: The Truth About Getting Around Free @ Fiddler's Elbow

Review by Mark Harding | 14 Aug 2012

The idea is neat: a female hitchhiker; a lone driver. They'll never meet again: it's the perfect confessional.

Clara Lilly has an engaging and sincere persona, she's good on the practical details and mechanics of hitchhiking and the humorous touches of recognition work well. The stories she tells are of men in crisis, jealous wives, danger, the search for love; suicide, and finding joy where you can. What, at the beginning of the show, seems like a series of separate traveller's tales gradually become arranged in an overarching narrative about the hitcher's own emotional journey.

The show has a slight schizophrenia between acted drama or storytelling event, and ultimately, needs more variety of tone across the collection of stories. However, if you want a heartfelt and calmly reflective 55 minutes amidst the maelstrom of the Fringe, Clara Lilly provides it.
