Circolombia @ Assembly Hall

A tossed salad of influence and energy

Feature by Daph Karoulla | 16 Aug 2011

Circolombia is the crème de la crème of the “Circo Para Todos” – Columbia’s national circus school – bringing their stories of hardship to the stage. One hour and ten minutes of pure energy, this show is a tasteful, precisely proportioned cocktail (shaken - not stirred!).

Based on the lives of the performers themselves, Urban explores and death through live voice-overs and almost violent, rhythmic beats. Part of the performance is built on dance - mainly street dance – as it is a style that carries an aggressive, all-or-nothing vibe.

As if this is not enough, aerial acrobatics, and incredible feats of strength and flexibility flood the show with ‘wow!’ moments. Each jump and stunt is another risk, since they perform with no net. In spite of a few rough landings from saltos and flips, the show goes on.

The lyrics may not be in English, but that does not matter here. The action - always accompanied by music - which  is enough to at least suggest what the cast wish to say. Ingredients from visual art, dance, circus, hip hop are tossed together, which are then ignited in a delicious flambé of a show.
