Have you ever felt eyes upon you when nobody else is around? Do you ever get the sense that you’re being followed as you walk alone through the city streets? Supernatural "expert" and sceptic Edward Dunning cannot shake this feeling, yet refuses to believe it is any more than trickery from one disgruntled Mr Karswell. And yet… how can he explain the ghastly figure that moves within a mysterious painting… getting closer, and closer, and closer? Box Tale Soup's bone-chilling new adaptation of classic M.R. James stories, combining aspects from many of his tales into one terrifying performance, is an original medium that explores the eerie imagination of this horror pioneer.

The audience become the students – believing, doubting, fearing – as Dunning gives his lectures, making eye contact with each and all in order to engage everyone to the highest degree. Transformed into spectators, the audience then watch as bystanders to this unique adaptation of creepy classics. An original haunting score and brilliantly spooky lighting suck you into a nightmarish world of spirits and curses. You may wish to look away through fear, but you will not be able to from enjoyment.

The use of puppets alongside actors effectively portrays characters and aspects of M.R. James’ tales that cannot be shown without a level of abstract interpretation. Performed exquisitely, the eerie puppets are an unexpectedly excellent method of portrayal for this spooky tale. Without stalling by switching characters, from acting to puppetry, both actors are impressive and macabre. The artistry, meticulous staging and set design make scene changes seamless and immersive, keeping the audience clinging to their seats.

From the lighting and original haunting score, down to each costume that incorporated texts from M.R. James' novels within the clothes, Casting the Runes is a wonder to see. If you think you’re brave enough to discover the truth behind the supernatural, then this is the show for you.
